Latest on the 2018 Lamar Hunt Open Cup Tournament

So I had some time and wanted to see how some of the underdog teams were doing in the US Open Cup soccer tournament.
Whats that you say? You didn't even know we had a soccer tournament for US teams? Well if you're interested in learning about the tournament and also want to see a tournament bracket with the latest results read on dear reader...

The US Open Cup soccer tournament or USOC, has been around since 1914 and is the oldest and longest running soccer competition in the United States. Renamed in 1999 to honor Lamar Hunt, a long time supporter of soccer in the US, it is the only tournament where amateur teams have a shot at the title next to professional teams.

In it's current form, the tournament host teams from all of the major US soccer leagues including MLS, USL, NPSL, PDL and several unaffiliated teams or regional teams. It is a single elimination tournament so all teams have to put it all on the line to keep moving forward.

Amateur teams from NPSL, PDL and regional leagues start in the first round with 52 teams. In the Second round,  USL Teams are introduced and MLS teams are introduced in the fourth round.  After the fourth round, the tournament follows a more traditional format with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

As of the end of round 2, some 22 teams are still competing, including Connecticut's own Elm City Express. Two amateur teams are guaranteed to get a match versus an MLS team, so it really is a possible underdog story!

Round 3 commences next week on May 23rd so be sure to tune into some of the matches. If you would like to see the current standings in bracket form, you can click here to see it.

I hope you get to enjoy some of the matches and root for some underdogs!
